Assignments

Assignment 1

Download and install the template on your simmons.edu webspace as your own portfolio page.  Personalize the site as directed.  Create a list of XML-related resources: general resources and domain-specific resources.  Ravage the literature and select about 10 resources for each group.  Correct APA style is required.

Assignment 2

Create a demonstration DTD.  Create an internal and external DTD and a demo .xml page applying the DTD.  Have this page available from the "Assignment 1" link on your portfolio page.

Assignment 3

Create a demonstration XML Scheme (.xsd).  Create an .xml page applying the schema.  Validate the schema [include the URL or name of the program you use to validate the page].

Assignment 4

Create three different transformations to manipulate the .xml from Assignment 3.

Assignment 5

Practice using the Java parsers and validating parsers that are provided in the GSLIS lab.  Folder for .java classes.  Directions in the 'read me' file.

Assignment 6

Practice creating .svg pages.  Directions.

Assignment 7

Write a paper detailing XML applications in some aspect of libraries.   Details in class, but the paper must be extremely well-written, no longer than 5 pages.  See the class management page.  

Assignment 8

Practice creating SOAP, METS, MODS and similar xml.

Assignment 9

Practice either Wireless Markup or Google Hacks.

Assignment 10

Write a paper expressing your understanding of the challenges facing using XML technologies - the pros and cons, the unfulfilled potential and possibilities - for some specific information-related need of your choosing.   Use the literature review section from Assignment 1 and the specifics from Assignment 7 in this paper.   Post the paper on your portfolio site.
