FileMaker Databases
The InfoSite As the database manager for ADD Inc, a design firm based in Cambridge, MA, I was responsible for researching, planning, and designing their first enterprise-wide database; this database tracked contacts, projects, marketing activities, employees, and archives. The Support Group, a national database development firm, built the basic structure and then I populated it with data from multiple sources, added new features, and maintained it. The project has been featured on the FileMaker web site as a FileMaker "success story." Thumbnail of the InfoSite home page.
Toolkits and Data Builders For architectural firms such as ADD Inc as well as for other organizations and individuals, I have built custom databases in FileMaker Pro to automate specific tasks. These range from typical architectural functions, such as programming, shop drawings, and construction administration, to tools for a costume designer and the curator of a major private art collection. Writing
Managing AutoCAD in the Design Firm: A Manual for Architects and Interior Designers.
(Addison-Wesley Computer Trade Press)
This manual draws on my experience working in various Boston-area architecture and design firms at a time when Computer-aided Design (CAD) was just becoming mainstreamed into design and drafting processes. Absorbing CAD effectively requires rethinking traditional workflow processes and management. Directed to project managers and design principals, the manual shows how to make CAD a profitable and effective tool in a design practice. The book is available from Amazon and the Boston Society of Architects bookstore. Thumbnail of Managing AutoCAD in the Design Firm
Technical Writing and Documentation Part of my experience in design firms has included documenting procedures in detailed manuals, writing specifications, and reorganizing and managing content for an intranet.

An example of my writing is available here; a section of a hypothetical manual on linking FileMaker databases to Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, this piece won the first annual Northeastern University Neil F. Duane Student Technical Writing Award.

Seminars and Training Presentations Drawing on various work experiences, I've developed a series of presentations about topics ranging from specific digital tools such as databases and web pages to broad issues like knowledge management and design programming. Past audiences have included professional associations, such as the American Institute of Architects (AIA), as well as college-level students, and colleagues. I also co-presented an web-enabled “virtual seminar” on knowledge management for the AIA. Thumbnail of seminar slide on knowledge management.
Sample Article The mission of the American Conifer Society (ACS) is to develop, conserve, and propagate conifers, as well as to educate the public about this marvelous family of trees and shrubs. The ACS's quarterly publication featured an article I wrote that was inspired by a trip I took to Cuba.
